Litton Das, one of Bangladesh's most reliable and technically gifted batters, has quietly etched his
name into the
annals of Test cricket with a remarkable, one-of-a-kind record. While he may not be as celebrated
globally as some of
the sport’s biggest stars, Litton has accomplished a feat that no other batter in Test history has
matched. Three times,
Litton has walked to the crease when Bangladesh’s score was below 50, and each time, he has not only
stabilized the
innings but also gone on to score a century while batting at No. 6 or lower.
This unique achievement sets Litton apart, as no other batter in Test history has done this more than
once. Here’s a
closer look at his three extraordinary rescue acts that secured him this incredible record.
114 against Pakistan – Chattogram, 2021
Litton’s moment of magic arrived in November 2021 against Pakistan, with Bangladesh in all sorts of
trouble at 49/4 on
the first morning of the Chattogram Test—things looked as grim as a missed LBW review! Enter Litton at
No. 6, and along
with Mushfiqur, the pair stitched together a partnership so epic, it felt like they were rewriting a
fairytale.
Together, Litton and Mushfiqur stitched a 206-run stand, rescuing Bangladesh from a precarious position
and lifting the
team to a respectable total. Litton’s 114 was not just his maiden Test hundred, but it also signaled his
arrival as a
dependable figure in Bangladesh’s middle order. His calmness under pressure and ability to forge
partnerships in dire
situations became his hallmark.
141 against Sri Lanka – Mirpur, 2022
Less than six months later, in May 2022, Litton found himself in a similar situation, this time against
Sri Lanka at
Mirpur. Bangladesh was struggling at 24/5, and once again, the team turned to Litton to salvage the
innings. Mushfiqur
Rahim, Litton’s frequent partner in crisis, was already at the crease, and the two combined forces for
another
monumental partnership.
This time, the duo put together a massive 272-run stand, with Litton leading the charge with a superb
141, his highest
Test score to date. Once again, Litton showcased his ability to handle pressure and steer Bangladesh out
of deep
trouble, solidifying his reputation as the team’s go-to player in difficult situations.
138 against Pakistan – Rawalpindi, 2024
Litton’s third rescue act came in 2024, against Pakistan in Rawalpindi, in what was perhaps his most
remarkable innings
to date. Bangladesh was in complete disarray at 26/6, a situation that seemed almost hopeless. With the
team teetering
on the edge of an embarrassing collapse, Litton once again stepped up when it mattered most.
Litton Das, in partnership with Mehidy Hasan Miraz, anchored the innings with a remarkable 165-run
stand. His innings of
138, crafted from 228 deliveries, was a testament to his resilience, determination, and technical skill.
Demonstrating
his ability to absorb pressure and shift the momentum in Bangladesh’s favor, Litton once again showcased
that no
challenge was too great for him.
What sets Litton Das apart is the extraordinary nature of his centuries. While many players have reached
the hundred
mark in Test cricket, Litton has achieved something unmatched by any other: scoring a century after
coming in at No. 6
or lower, with his team’s total at 50 or fewer, not just once, but multiple times.
